Cycling on Georgian Bay for Hospice Huronia Midland - Cycle Camelot · Jun 8, 10:45 pm

The rain held out (for the most part) while we (Stuart Legget and Carol Currie, of Claustro) joined with 50 others as a part of the 8th annual CYCLE CAMELOT adventure, hosted by Cameron Douglas.

What an amazing day! We met at a beautiful location on Georgian Bay, looking out at Beckwith Island, and had three choices of routes from 8km, 28km or a 50km route … Stu and I chose to do the middle route to Thunder Beach and thankfully so as the rain (AND THE WIND) came out before the day was done.

Hospice Huronia was the charity of choice for this year’s Cycle Camelot.

Willisville Mountain vs Vale Update with Globe and Mail · Jun 8, 10:28 pm

Jon Butler of the La CLoche Mountain Preservation Society See website for details has been on the phone and interviewed by CTV, CBC, Sudbury Star, Sault Star, Northern Life, and the Globe and Mail, all published articles today June 8, 2010.

Both Jon and myself were interviewed by Ann Hui of the Globe and Mail regarding our positions as artists and local residents about the potential mining of Willisville mountain by Vale.

Unfortuneately the native concerns to the land, spoken by Christi Belcourt, was edited out along with my hopes that someone can purchase the land to permanently protect the mountain, perhaps through a Land Trust, much like our local Georgian Bay Land Trust protects Islands between Midland and Parry Sound.

It is my hopes that the land is protected from any mining for future generations so that we can preserve a historical, and cultural icon.

Town of Midland is getting a Cultural Centre for the Arts! · Jun 1, 11:42 pm

The Town of Midland is getting a $5 million cultural centre compliments of the Reinhart Weber Foundation.

The Midland Cultural Centre will be built at King and Elizabeth streets on the site of the former Roxy Theatre and is expected to open by September 2011.
The building will be over 20,000 square feet of Fine Art to include a gallery space and the Quest Art School and Gallery. The Centre will also include a theatre and facilities for the exclusive use of the Huronia Players.

We at Claustro want to take the time to thank Mr. Weber for this generous gift to the Arts Community here in Midland, a town otherwise known as the Gateway to Georgian Bay and home to one of the largest Mural Tours in Canada.

Mayor Jim Downer states “Midland has been and sees itself in the future as the prosperous economic heart of north Simcoe County and a home to leaders in the emerging industrial, intellectual and creative economy.”

THe only sad thing about the building of a new Arts Centre in this location is the loss of one of Fred Lenz’s best Murals, dated 1996, so I wanted to document this fine work before demolition.
